Abstract

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by excessive and irrepressible worry (apprehensive anticipation) that causes high anxiety level and emotional distress. The Intolerance of Uncertainty Model (IUM) of GAD attributes a key role to Intolerance of Uncertainty, and additional roles to Positive Beliefs about Worry, Negative Problem Orientation and Cognitive Avoidance, in the development and maintenance of worry. Next, a clinical case of a 45 years old male with a diagnosis of a Generalized Anxiety Disorder, according to DSM-V criteria is presented. Based on cognitive behavioral therapy and with particular emphasis on Intolerance of Uncertainty Model, the therapeutic process is detailed as well as other components included to address patient issues not included in this program. A review that shows efficiency and effectiveness is made.
