 Abstract

The goal of the present study is to analyze the role of antisocial personality characteristics in couple violence. For this purpose, a sample of 198 batterers, remitted for psychological treatment by the Courts of Violence against Women from the Region of Madrid through the CIS Victoria Kent of Penitentiary Institutions was analyzed. The results indicate that the men who present antisocial personality traits, reported having performed more psychological aggressions and more minor physical aggressions, and they also reported having been the victims of episodes of minor injury more frequently than those who did not present antisocial characteristics. Analyzing victimization and perpetration in each one of the groups, in those who present antisocial characteristics, there were no differences between victimization and perpetration, whereas those who did not present these characteristics considered themselves more as victims than as perpetrators of psychological and physical aggressions and severe injury. The importance of these results directly affects the development of psychological interventions focused on the underlying personality characteristics of the aggressors.

KEYWORDS: antisocial personality, couple violence, batterers.
