Abstract

The approach of serious and lasting mental illness poses a challenge for professionals in charge of implementing rehabilitation processes. On many occasions it is not only the typical signs or symptoms of these pathologies that have to be taken into account/determine outcomes, but other circumstances such as substance abuse or disruptive and even antisocial behaviors, which frequently appear simultaneously.
The presence of these behaviors hinders the rehabilitation process of these users and, by extension, that of others, thus representing an additional difficulty. In this context, we propose the creation of a treatment unit specialized in these behavioral problems. This unit will be established within the framework of an inpatient service of prolonged psychiatric care, in which the vast majority of the users are involuntarily admitted. The aim is to assess the suitability of this type of unit characterized by high structure and limits, as well as to question its usefulness in the reduction or eradication of disruptive behaviors.

KEYWORDS: serious and lasting mental illness, antisocial behaviors, involuntary admission.
