Abstract

This paper reports a systematic review on the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and the basic dimensions of personality of the Big Five model. Several searches of PsycINFO, MEDLINE, PILOTS, and Psicodoc bibliographic databases and consultation of the most recent and exhaustive literature reviews made it possible to find 15 studies on the relationship between the Big Five and the symptomatology of PTSD. The joint results of these studies suggest that: (1) there is a positive, medium-large sized relationship between neuroticism and PTSD symptom severity (mean r = .38); (2) PTSD symptom severity is slightly and negatively correlated with extraversion (mean r = -.11), agreeableness (mean r = -.18), and conscientiousness (mean r = - .18), and (3) there is no relationship between openness and PTSD symptom severity (mean r = -.01). These findings suggest that neuroticism could be an important risk factor for PTSD, while extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness could be small protective factors for PTSD. The findings are discussed regarding the capability of the Big Five to organize and clarify related psychological constructs, and their implications in the clinical and forensic fields.
